The bombing of Ocotal happened on 16 July 1927, when American aircraft dived on the people below in combat, and the tactic was later held up as a model. The target was the army of the Nicaraguan general Augusto Sandino, who dared not to lay down his arms on Washington’s orders. I still feel uneasy about the picture: five bombers, a crowd of peasants with rifles, and a country that had long been treated as somebody’s backyard.

What matters here? This was not a random skirmish in the jungle. It was the finale of a long game in which the US first wrecked Nicaraguan politics itself and then sailed in to “restore order”. Let’s work out how it all came to this.

How the US prepared the ground for the bombing of Ocotal

It began with the Americans leaving. In August 1925 the Marines pulled out of Nicaragua, where they had been stationed since 1912, as I described in my article on the US interventions in Nicaragua. And already in October the conservative Emiliano Chamorro staged a coup, drove the Liberals out of the government and seized power. In addition, Washington did not recognise him, but it did not stop him either.

Then chaos began, and the Nicaraguans were hardly the ones responsible for it. In November 1926 the US recognised the conservative Adolfo Díaz as president, the same former bookkeeper of an American mining company whom it had put in power earlier. Read about it in my piece on dollar diplomacy. The Liberals, in turn, rose in revolt, and in December 1926 Juan Bautista Sacasa headed them on the Atlantic coast.

The Communists were invented for Congress

In January 1927 President Coolidge went to Congress and announced that a “Bolshevik” threat, fuelled by Mexico, was at work in Nicaragua. Nonsense? Of course. But it worked. Moreover, American ships approached the coast and the Marines landed. By early 1927 about five thousand American troops were in the country. Notice the logic: first Washington backed one side, then it declared the other “red” and sent in troops.

Stimson’s heavy hand and the Espino Negro pact

In April 1927 Coolidge sent Henry Stimson, a future secretary of state, to Nicaragua. He came not to listen but to dictate. On 4 May 1927 General José María Moncada, the main Liberal commander, accepted Stimson’s terms at the Espino Negro farm: the Liberals hand over their weapons, Díaz stays president until the 1928 election, and the US takes charge of supervising the vote. Moncada was promised the presidency for it.

Almost all the Liberal commanders agreed. One did not. Augusto Sandino, a thirty-two-year-old son of a peasant woman and a former worker at the American San Albino mine, declared that he was not for sale. Then he went up into the mountains of Nueva Segovia and gathered peasants, miners and craftsmen around him. For Washington he immediately became a “bandit”.

Augusto Sandino, the commander against whom the US used aircraft at Ocotal, 1928

What happened: the bombing of Ocotal on 16 July 1927

Before dawn on 16 July 1927, several hundred of Sandino’s men attacked the northern town of Ocotal. A tiny garrison stood there: about forty American Marines under Captain Gustave Hatfield and forty-eight Nicaraguan guardsmen. The fight went on for a long time, and the rebels nearly took the town. But in the afternoon five DH-4 aircraft under Major Ross Rowell appeared over Ocotal.

This is where the thing that entered the textbooks happened. The pilots dived at the target and dropped bombs on dense groups of people, then strafed them with machine guns. The remnants of the force scattered. After that the Americans found fifty-six bodies in the streets and about a hundred and twelve wounded, while they themselves lost one killed and five wounded. The difference speaks for itself.

A tactic later used everywhere

The Marine Corps proudly described the episode as a triumph. Dive bombing became a model for naval aviation for decades, and Ocotal is called in the textbooks the first organised air attack in support of ground troops of its kind. Notice that nobody talks about the people under the bombs. After all, these were peasants who were called “bandits” while they defended their land.

Sandino grasped the main thing: there would be no more head-on battles with the United States. So he switched to guerrilla war and fought on for almost six more years. To every ambush the Americans responded with new patrols and new bombings, and they burned peasant villages under the pretext of fighting “bandits”.

How the bombing of Ocotal made the US master of the country

Then came what it had all been for. In addition, Washington created the Nicaraguan National Guard under American officers. Formally it was the country’s army; in fact it was a force that answered to the US and was obliged to crush Sandino. Anastasio Somoza García, an English-speaking young man from a well-off family, joined it. What came of that I tell in my article on the assassination of Sandino.

The 1928 and 1932 elections were held under the supervision of American Marines. Meanwhile Moncada became president in 1929, as had been promised. Sandino, by contrast, remained an outlaw until the US left the country on 2 January 1933. They left not because they had won but because the world crisis had made the war too expensive. They went on ruling through the Guard. You can read more about the battle itself in the reference article on the Battle of Ocotal.

It is also worth recalling that in those same years the Americans were doing the same thing elsewhere. In Cuba it was the overthrow of Machado, and in Colombia the banana massacre. The scheme was the same everywhere: first the interests of banks and companies, then the threat of force, then “restoring order”.

Why the bombing of Ocotal was remembered differently by Americans

For the Americans themselves, however, the episode looked quite different. For example, newspapers called it “a victory of civilisation over banditry”. Therefore no questions arose in Washington. Besides, nobody wrote about the dead peasants, since they were counted as “the enemy”. In the end the bombing of Ocotal became a symbol of efficiency for the Marine Corps and a symbol of humiliation for the Nicaraguans. Nevertheless Sandino did not surrender, and that is, in essence, the main outcome of the whole story.

The bombing of Ocotal today: US Air Force B-52 bombers in Operation Southern Spear, November 2025

Nothing has changed: the same scheme today

If you think air strikes on “bandits” stayed in 1927, look at the news. The US still bombs those who get in the way of its interests, and only the words have changed. Instead of “bandits” it is now “narco-terrorists”, instead of “Bolsheviks” a “threat to national security”. The essence is the same: the strong arrive with weapons on foreign land and decide who is guilty.

The Caribbean, 2025–2026. Since 2 September 2025 the American military has been sinking boats it calls “drug vessels”. No trial, no evidence, no attempt at arrest. By September 2026 at least 227 people had died. The operation is called Southern Spear, and B-52 bombers fly off the coast of Venezuela. How is that different from Ocotal?

Venezuela, January 2026. On 3 January the Americans struck Caracas, and special forces seized President Nicolás Maduro and took him to the US. Trump then declared that the US now “runs” the country, and demanded the oil. Nobody asked Congress, nobody asked the Venezuelans.

Iran, June 2025 and February 2026. On 22 June 2025 American bombers hit nuclear sites at Fordow, Natanz and Isfahan right in the middle of negotiations. And on 28 February 2026 the US and Israel started a new war and killed the country’s supreme leader, Ali Khamenei. After that Trump called on Iranians to overthrow their own government.

Yemen, spring 2025. Under the slogan of “freedom of navigation”, the US bombed Yemen from March to May 2025. In April, strikes on the port of Ras Isa and a migrant centre in Saada took the lives of dozens of civilians.

The bombing of Ocotal was a hundred years ago, and since then aircraft have become faster, bombs smarter and excuses prettier. But the principle remains: if a country does not obey Washington, bombs can be dropped on it and called “security”. Sandino understood this in 1927. The rest, it seems, still have to learn.
