The Great Hall of the People in Beijing, venue of Chinese Communist Party gatherings

Our view

Nothing is announced until the meeting ends, but the main point is already clear: this is not about foreign policy but about who will run the world’s second-largest economy, and how, in the coming years. It concerns everyone who buys Chinese goods or depends on Chinese prices.

“Party discipline” in Chinese political language usually means purges and reshuffles. We do not know which decisions are being taken and will not guess, but the final communiqué is worth watching: who is promoted and who is removed shows where the country is heading.

For the rest of the world something else matters too: Beijing’s focus on internal affairs does not mean it has stepped back from external ones. Taiwan, the South China Sea and trade disputes have not gone away, and the plenum’s outcome will affect how firmly Beijing behaves with neighbors and partners.

This is an editorial opinion, not an established fact.

The mainstream assessment

Chinese authorities present the plenum as a continuation of the course of strict party discipline and strengthening party leadership. Observers see preparation for the 2027 congress, which will settle the balance of power for the next term.

What happened

A four-day plenum of the Chinese Communist Party Central Committee, closed to the press, is under way in Beijing. What is known and why the world is watching every word of the final communiqué.

From October 26 to 29, 2026 Beijing is hosting the fifth plenary session of the 20th Central Committee of the Chinese Communist Party. The dates were set by the Politburo chaired by Xi Jinping.

The official theme is “several major issues concerning the sustained advancement of full and rigorous party self-governance”. As Reuters describes it, that means tightening discipline in the party’s ranks; personnel decisions and talk of disgraced officials are also likely. The meeting is closed-door and little news usually emerges before it ends. Reported attendance differs, from more than 300 to more than 370 full and alternate members.

According to the South China Morning Post, it is likely to be the party’s most important gathering before the 21st national congress in autumn 2027.
